If you’ve noticed small, rough bumps on the backs of your arms, thighs, or even your Peach/cheeks, you may be dealing with a very common skin condition called keratosis pilaris. Often described as resembling “chicken skin,” it affects many people and, while harmless, it can feel frustrating if you don’t know what it is or how to treat it.
Well, firstly, what is keratosis pilaris?
Keratosis pilaris (often shortened to KP) occurs when your skin produces an excess of keratin, a natural protein that helps protect the skin. Instead of shedding smoothly, this extra keratin forms plugs that block the openings of hair follicles. The result is a patch of tiny, rough bumps that may feel dry to the touch.
Why does it happen?
KP is influenced by genetics, so if family members experience it, there’s a good chance you might too. It can become more noticeable when your skin is dry, during the cooler months, or if your skin barrier is out of balance. The bumps themselves are not harmful, but many people look for ways to smooth their appearance and keep their skin more comfortable.
What can you do about it?
While keratosis pilaris can’t be permanently cured, there are simple ways to manage it and reduce the rough texture over time:
Gentle exfoliation: Using a mild exfoliator helps loosen and remove the buildup of dead skin cells without irritating the skin further. Overly harsh scrubs can make KP worse, so a gentle approach is best.
Hydration: Keeping the skin well-moisturised is key. Hydrated skin helps soften the bumps and supports a smoother texture.
Barrier care: A strong, healthy skin barrier can minimise flare-ups. Using nourishing products that protect and repair the barrier makes a noticeable difference.
How we can help
At Peachface, we believe in keeping skincare simple and effective. For keratosis pilaris, a consistent routine that’s kind to the skin is more important than harsh treatments.
Our Equi Oil Cleanser gently cleans without stripping away natural oils.
The Hydra3 Smoothie exfoliator helps with exfoliating the skin gently, removing the tiny ‘plugs’ that cause a keratin build up. It helps to then deliver deep hydration, helping the skin stay supple and balanced.
The Moisture Serum, enriched with natural oils, supports the skin barrier and keeps moisture locked in for longer-lasting comfort.
With regular use, these products can help reduce the rough, dry feel of KP and bring your skin back to a healthier, smoother state.
